The Impact of Nourishing Foods on the Body
The changes in cooler weather and shorter days, can have a significant impact on many people's emotional regulation. These changes can cause lower serotonin levels and fluctuations to one's cortisol and melatonin levels, which can lead to fatigue, trouble focusing, mood swings, and difficulty relaxing in the evenings.
Almost 90% of your serotonin receptors reside in the gut. To combat the exhaustion, whether emotional or physical, that may happen during this season, you can help support your body by eating nourishing foods. Some examples of these include seeds and nuts that are high in omega-3, such as chia or walnuts, and eating fermented foods like sauerkraut or kefir. Complex carbs, such as sweet potatoes or oats, can help provide consistent energy as opposed to foods filled with artificial sugar that will cause a sugar rush. You can also help to give your gut-brain axis a boost with leafy greens, lean proteins, and water-rich foods.
